Hi Pedro, I couldn’t agree with you more. Due to the nature of this contest and the fact we had very little time to plan and execute, it really limited our ability to expand the contest to many more countries. However, we will take our learnings from this contest, and better plan for a more inclusive contest next time to make up for those lost point ).

Hi Sunny, first of all thank you for the answer, well the problem is that it kinda make us (the rest of world) feel like regional, and in these days i’m sure you can do better
I’m sure that many developers would love to contribute but can’t just because of legalities.
I understand that legal stuff is hard to overcome but still the way i feel it is that it kinda makes you loose points amongst the comunnity.

Hi Pedro, the reason only US, CA and UK are allowed into the contest is purely legal. Due to the nature of this contest, we tried our best to allow as many countries into the contest as we could without over complicating various legal requirements. This does not mean that we will not throw regional contests in the future though.

While eBay’s response was a good example of a big company listening to the community I do have one more question, why can’t developers from other countries participate? That is a major drawback…

[...] I’ve been called out. So I originally bitched and moaned about how I wasn’t going to enter the eBay widget contest because of the restrictive rules about no open source code. That same day I got an email from someone at eBay, spoke with someone on the phone to explain my issues, and now they’ve gone and changed the rules to be accommodating. I was very impressed with eBay’s concern and willingness to listen to developers. So now I guess I have to enter the contest, right? Unfortunately the truth is I probably won’t get my act together to create an entry, but now the only excuse I have is that I’m too busy. I’m going to try to carve out some time to make an entry, but god knows if that will actually happen. When I originally complained, I was hiding my busyness/laziness behind my rant about the rules. Now eBay has gone and done everything I wanted to make the rules better, and I feel like my bluff has been called. [...]

This is hilarious.. At times I think there is room for swearing in blogs and this line made me laugh (i was in an airport terminal and people gave me weird looks)
